When do you feel the most confident? When I’m wearing something like what I wore today. When I really feel like it’s something that is me– when it’s comfortable but is also cute. For example, I really like wearing knee socks because they’re warm but they add to your outfit. When it’s comfy and cute, I feel good.

Laura pairs a thrifted Express skirt from the ’90s with a crochet top that she thrifted in Portland from Crossroads on Hawthorne. The knee high socks and Docs make the outfit perfect for transitioning from winter to spring.

Is there something that you notice or that catches your attention that others wear?  I’ve noticed that Docs are a staple for a lot of people. I know they are for me.

When did you first decide you wanted Docs? Oh gosh, I have wanted them for so long. I was waiting ’til Christmas last year. I finally got them after waiting for months. I knew I wanted the dark cherry red ones. So, I was really excited when I got them.

These vegan dark red Dr. Martens stand out from the usual classic black. They add another pop of color to Laura’s outfit.

How do you style them? I love wearing them with knee socks or cute socks peaking out the top. I can wear them with skirts, jeans–I seriously feel like I could wear them with just about anything. Like dress them up, dress them down. They’re perfect.

Laura’s knee high socks have an extra button detail.

If you had to wear the same outfit everyday, what would you wear? I would probably wear the Docs. I already basically wear them everyday. I’d wear a flowly comfortable skirt or dress with a jean jacket. Those are kind of the staple items.

Do you have a process for getting dressed in the morning? I wake up and obviously look at the weather. Then I pick one things that I want to wear and I get really stubborn. If I want to wear a specific skirt, I’ll try on like five different things just because I want to wear that skirt. It’s kind of fun because it forces me to rearrange and make new outfits.

How do you think fashion has affected your life? It has given me a lot of confidence and it is also a really fun artistic outlet. I don’t really care if things don’t match or if people don’t like it. I like it when it feels like a finished artistic work.
