Why did you decide to study journalism? I decided to study journalism because UO is known for having a great journalism program, and it would allow me to pursue my passion of writing and my desire to travel. I want to write about important things happening in the world and bring attention to certain issues that may be overlooked, especially social and environmental ones.
Have you lived in Oregon your whole life? I was born in Oregon, and I’ve lived here most of my life, but I’ve also moved around a bit to Southern California and Florida.
Do you think that living in Oregon, especially Portland, has influenced your style? Yes, it has. The Portland style can be described with the word “hipster” and with an “I don’t care” vibe. When I think of a “typical Portland” outfit, I picture a casual-cool look with layers, a hint of weirdness and possibly a beanie. Popular items within the Portland street style scene would be Fjallraven backpacks, vintage tees and denim. I wear a lot of denim and sneakers, lots of t-shirts, denim jackets and outerwear [such as] bomber jackets. My go-to outfit is jeans, sneakers and a t-shirt.
Katie loves to shop at vintage and thrift shops and found her tee at House of Vintage in Portland.
Do you have any favorite pieces in your wardrobe? My favorite t-shirt would have to be my Twin Peaks band tee. I like it because it is a unique shirt and has a good memory behind it. I went to a Twin Peaks concert with my friends this past summer and met them after the show. Also, my favorite piece of denim would have to be my vintage denim overall shorts that I scored from the House of Vintage thrift store in southeast Portland. This was my go-to piece over the summer as they were extremely easy to throw on, and they have a TON of pockets, which is always a plus. I also can’t live without my black ripped skinny jeans from Topshop.
Katie completes her outfit with Nike Air Force 1s.
Katie is seen here carrying her orange Fjallraven Kanken backpack.
How has your style evolved over the years? As a young child, I dressed myself in overall dresses with striped t-shirts underneath and scrunchies, of course. In late elementary school, I wore a lot of Justice tees and jeans. Middle school was a dark time for my wardrobe, consisting of mostly Aeropostale and Hollister tees, skinny jeans and Uggs. But then my style kind of came full circle as I have diverted back to striped tees and denim.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years and how would you dress? In 10 years, I see myself living in a big city, working and being well-traveled. I also see myself dressing more classy, such as a “Soho New York vibe.” Oversized coats!
