Name: Katie S.
Hometown: Tigard, Oregon
Katie sports an H&M floral jumpsuit on a sunny spring day.
What inspired your outfit today? Just the sun. I like to think it’s a flower power jumpsuit. I just think it’s so cute. It was my splurge from H&M.
How do you describe your style? I think kind of quirky. I don’t like going totally with the flow. I like playing with stuff, having something different with each outfit, definitely embracing this weather. I love spring weather.
How has your style changed over time? It’s definitely gotten more confident. I’m definitely experimenting with stuff, which I really love, and incorporating makeup more into it and spending a lot of time on my makeup.
What do you like about makeup? It’s a power. It’s the art I can do. I really enjoy it. It calms me down in the morning. It gets me ready for the day.
Why do you think you have become more confident in your clothing? I think because I look around and everyone else has their individual style, and it really inspires me to think, “I can do that too.”
Do you think that’s something different at college than in high school? I think so because you’re kind of free and you get to see all of the different people.
She wears Marshalls sandals.
Who are some of your inspirations? I like YouTubers like Zoella. Selena Gomez is always very beautiful. People like that.
Has there been a trend you’ve been wanting to try? The fun-colored lip. I got a sparkly lipstick. I went to Ulta yesterday, and there were all these bright colors, and I thought, “I want to pull that off.”
What is the song that fits with your style? Probably “Five Years Time” by Noah and the Whale. It’s very upbeat, but it’s kind of a fantasy song, which I really like.
If you could have the clothes from any TV show or movie, what would it be? Anything from the ’50s or the ’70s. I love those time periods.
She wears a Walmart sweater and an H&M jacket with a Fjallraven Kanken backpack.
Why did you decide to study journalism? I really like writing, and I wanted to tell stories about the world and how people think about it.
What’s your dream job or place to work? My dream place to work would be in London for the BBC, writing for them. It’s been a dream of mine to go ever since I was young. I have always wanted to live in London. My friend and I always said, “We’ll share a flat together in London.”
Is there anything about the style there that you’re inspired by? It’s kind of Art Deco and out there. They have Topshop, which has really cute outfits. Thats also kind of my style.
Do you think having the internet and access to fashion around the world has changed your style? Oh definitely, definitely. I love Instagram. I just recently got an Instagram. I’m sort of behind the curve. So looking at stuff like that or on Pinterest is an inspiration.
How do you see yourself dressing in 10, 20 years from now? I want to look a little more formal. I’m hoping I’ll have more money, so I can buy more expensive clothes, but hopefully still be colorful and fun and loving life.
How do you find clothes that you can afford but are still stylish? H&M and Forever 21 are the places I go to because I think they’re pretty cheap, but you can find staple items.
Do you ever feel with your style, you stand out from people on campus or in Oregon? Yeah I think so. Just walking today, everyone is in jeans and a T-shirt, and I thought, “Look at me in my all-floral jumpsuit.”
Does that give you confidence or make you feel uncomfortable? Sometimes I think, “Oh it makes me feel insecure,” but at the same time, I can just strut it and make myself think I’m cute.
What role do clothes play in your life? I think just creativity. It’s just another source of creativity that I’ve been drawn to, and I just love making a decision in the morning: “What to wear or what not to wear?”
