Porsche Moms: Gen Z’s High Speed Need to Succeed

Trends fly through the TikTok stratosphere at high speeds - the latest driver in the race? The need to succeed. And the face of this new driver? Porsche.

Recently, TikTok has been chock full of the future dreams and aspirations of Gen-zers everywhere. To the tune of TELEKINESIS by Travis Scott, users can “see the future” in BMW’s, Audi’s, Ferrari’s and more. Luxury cars have become the ultimate indicator of status and success among young adults. It’s the “you made it” purchase of the century. But, it seems as though the most coveted ride is the Porsche.

This sparks the conversation… While we all want to succeed, why do we all want the same things in that success? It seems as though this trend has categorized everyone's futures into one vehicle or another.

The Porsche Mom Enters the Race

The Porsche Mom. Who is she, and why does everyone want to be her? Tiktok’s latest trending brainchild, “Porsche Mom,” has been born. She’s high class. Gold jewelry adorns her neck, she wears stilettos to pick the kids up from daycare, and has a closet full of clothes from every designer you can think of. She’s posh, she’s rich, and most importantly, she drives a Porsche. If you want to be a Porsche mom, you’re either the best in your field or you’re marrying rich.

The Porsche Mom has become a notion of success in her own right. The title has amassed thousands of videos across TikTok and Instagram. She’s the epitome of success in the eyes of young adult women. Millions of people engage with the content, saying they all want to achieve the same thing (and show it off with the same wheels). Why are we so obsessed with being rich? Why are objects the face of success? And, perhaps most importantly, why is the image of success the same for everyone?

Social Media: The Ultimate Driving Machine

Statistically, Generation Z spends the most time on social media, one of the most popular apps being TikTok. We are a generation growing up with influences and influencers at the click of a button. We are exposed to new information everyday; Whether it’s a video about where to invest money, a life hack for overnight curls, or a recipe for egg white pancakes, we consume it all, and fast. This is a key reason as to why our consumption is so deeply rooted in what we see online.

On TikTok, anything can go viral, and anything can become the trend of the week. The Porsche Mom lifestyle is no different. There is so much content advertising the luxury lifestyle - designer clothes, european automotives, and mega mansions. This flashy lifestyle is put on a pedestal, and everyone wants a piece.

Are We Doomed to Compete in the Same Race?

While not true for everyone, a good part of our generation is trapped in this endless cycle of social media dictation. It seems as though we see one video about a car and it becomes our “dreamcar,” the object of our every desire after viewing it for a mere ten seconds. Whether we know it or not, these internet trends weasel their way into the forefront of our minds and alter our plans for the future. We become so obsessed with trend following that we lose individuality. But if everyone was a Porsche Mom, it would lose all sense of meaning. If our entire generation wants the same thing, how are we to differentiate? How can we all win the same race?
