The Future is Female and Her Name Doechii
Jaylah Hickmon, popularly known as Doechii, is a Grammy-winning artist from Tampa, Florida who is making a huge impact on the music industry. She won Best Rap Album for her mixtape, Alligator Bites Never Heal, becoming only one of three women to receive this, following Lauryn Hill and Cardi B. Doechii, being only 26, is an independent artist, musician, creative director, and choreographer who is classically trained in music, with a diploma in vocal tech and classical choral singing.
Doechii began writing poetry and rap in high school. When she graduated, she knew she wanted to pursue a career in music. Her background in musical theater has shaped her ability to create impressive musical videos with captivating visuals and style that has drawn inspiration from anime and fantasy.
As a role model for black women all over the world, Doechii encourages others to pursue their dreams, using her platform to promote authenticity and self-expression. Her unique music is personal to her, exploring themes of vulnerability, growth, and self-discovery. She’s open about her journey with sobriety, a change that has helped her pave a new path to shape her artistry in becoming the best version of herself. Doechii also isn't afraid of using her music as a form of expression to advocate for things like self-love, mental health, and amplifying LGBTQ+ community voices.
Doechii stays true to herself, making music on her terms. She views her music as a form of therapy, using her life experiences and personal truths to shape her sound. Her utter uniqueness and blend of hip-hop, R&B, and experimental rap continue to push boundaries, cementing her place as one of the most exciting artists in the industry today.
Doechii’s top hit, What it is (solo version), is a great song that is a perfect example of who Doechii can be. This song can appeal to anyone, showcasing her raw emotion to its fullest potential. Her remix with Kodak Black highlights just how unique she can be, giving people a chance to explore something different from what they’re used to. It’s impressive how much of her personality is shown through her flow and intonation. This woman is a lyricist, and I personally can't wait to see what's in store for her.
